It is often unclear as to what constitutes archives and what constitutes manuscripts. An archive refers to the building or domain housing the historic materials or to the organization responsible for their care. However it also refers to the materials themselves.
Archives refer to the documents created/received/accumulated by an individual or institution during the conduct of affairs, where the documents are retained and preserved due to their inherent value.
Manuscripts are the documents or papers of an individual, an artificial collection (not in original context) of materials from various places or persons, or "individual items acquired because of some special significance".
